University is a place where people gather to learn and enrich their knowledge to brighten their career. So unhealthy practices and misbehaves, crimes and offences are least expected especially in such areas for most of them are educated, learned, grown up, disciplined and cultured unlike the people on the streets or illiterate peasants in the villages. However, if you look closely, no corners of SIU buildings are left unwatched. We could see CCTV cameras filming from each and every corners starting from car parking’s, entrance and exit door to one step behind the doors of rest rooms and bed rooms, in deed everywhere in the campus. In times I feel as if we are criminals in the jail where somebody keep his eyes on for 24 hrs. Or as if we are suspects of some crimes. We appreciate that our university is so concerned of our safety and security but I believe no one by this stage of being in a university would be under age. Everyone is matured enough and deserves some privacy and freedom. Mistake me not, I don’t mean to say that I want to do something illegal or something that violates the rules and regulations of the university but I personally feel placing cameras in every corners is too much and beyond limit. We accept in some places such as parking space and computer labs and some other places where necessary but not at every doors and corridors.

If it is for security than nowhere in the world so far crime rate appear to drop much due to cameras. Of course, people do believe that it is to deter crime. Moreover as I mentioned earlier this is a university and I personally feel such security systems are not necessary in place. Cigarette buds and smokes filth the air, right in the compact corridor of the dormitory, wide open under the camera yet nobody dares at it but only to make some murmur on the lips of the nonsmokers. Cloths hung in the verandah to dry are occasionally missing, vegetables, eggs, and other food stuffs stored in the common kitchen are often used by some people without the permission from the rightful owner, football boots in the corridors are lost frequently but what can CCTV cameras do, absolutely nothing. On the contrary, if we are shedding the rush hours of traffic and deadlines and if we call our friends (esp. opposite sex) in the room for some discussion and at times for some celebrations such as birth day and so on, than the security guards would rush to their breath and knock our room. Some people who howl like a jackal in the middle of night, kicks the ball so hard on the walls of the corridor breaking the silence of night goes unwatched by the cameras. Perhaps cameras must be sleeping and functioning only during day time. If the cameras were waiting for criminals who only comes with guns in hand and bombs in bag than I think its better not to decorate the corners with cameras.
